Muhammad Bashir Mai
Born in the late 1950s to the family of Alhaji Mai in Yola town, Adamawa State, Nigeria. Muhammad Bashir Mai attended Government Secondary School Bauchi, where he obtained his West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1977. Mai was later recruited into the Federal Public Service and served for thirteen years (13 Years) in the Ministry of Agriculture under the Upper Benue River Basin Development Authority Yola, Adamawa State from 1977 to 1990. During the period he was sponsored to pursue a B.Sc. Degree at the Prestigious University of Miaduguri Borno State Nigeria where he obtained a B.Sc. Political Science and Administrative Studies in 1982. Upon his graduation, he proceeded for a one year mandatory National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) in Bauchi State in the year 1983.
After the completion of his NYSC, he returned to the Federal Public Service. Mai rose through the ranks from Junior Officer to Senior Officer after his Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the same University of Maiduguri in the year 1990. In early 1991, he got appointment with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) an arm of the ministry of Defence, where he proceeded on transfer of service as Principal Administrative Officer. While in DICON, he rose gradually to the position of the Director of Human Resource Management (HRM). Mai is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, Fellow of the Institute of Industrialists & Corporate Administrators and also Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration. He retired from active public service on the position of a Director with effect from 14 November 2012.
Muhammad Bashir Mai enjoys volunteer work for humanitarian services, right from his school days. He was involved actively as an official in various religious organizations, in government institutions, like being the Secretary General of Muslim Students Society (UNIMAID) or the Chairman of Muslim Corper’s Association, Bauchi State and at the NGO level, he serves as official in the Vision Trust Foundation, Kaduna and the Waff Road Mosque Forum, Kaduna. Mai due to his vast administrative experience has also taken a part-time work, serving as the Director of both Continental Development & Relief Organization and the AAFAAQ Educational Foundation both located in Kaduna.
Muhammad Bashir Mai has a great obsession with NGOs perhaps as his own way of returning favor to his own community. He took the business of NGOs as a way of paying back the valuable services he received from his community while growing up, which indeed formed the basis of his acceptance to serve in the International Center for Interfaith Peace and Harmony (ICIPH) as Co-Director, Strategy & Partnership.
Mai always believes that Truth is the only instrument Nigeria and particularly the Northern part of the country where he himself belongs could be used to achieve peaceful co-existence among people of different religions. Quoting Shaykh Usman Danfodio, he would always admonish that “Conscience in an open wound, only truth can heal it”. Mai’s Hobbies include reading, travelling and helping other people in dire need. He is married and blessed with Children.
